My average night driving for Lyft on the mean streets of Orange County, California nets me anywhere from $50 to $100, or an hourly wage of $15-$20. Not bad. Not bad at all. But some nights aren’t so lucrative: Recently I pulled in $24 for 5 hours of work. Uh oh, I’m making less than minimum wage!
That’s where new Lyft user referral bonuses become extremely valuable. Even though I only made $24 in fares, I made $30 in referral bonuses! If it wasn’t for those bonuses, the night would have been a complete bust.
And for the other drivers who drove that slow night, it was a bust! My super awesome secret profitable promotion system saved me.
The “Bonuses” all came from new Lyft users punching in my referral code when they signed up for the app
Here’s what most people don’t know: Lyft pays drivers $10 to sign up new Lyft users. Lyft drivers who have a knack for promotion net hundreds of dollars promoting for Lyft, but most drivers give up after handing out a few referral cards and getting no results. Here are the referral tips of the pros:
Referral tips for Lyft Drivers: Make more money promoting
1. Hand your referral card to people who will need the app in the next hour or two.
I’ve heard stories from drivers who had great success handing out their referral cards to people getting out of cabs, people walking in and out of bars, people going into events. In other words, people who are about to need a ride soon. A free ride from Lyft becomes very enticing at that moment.
2. Don’t just hand someone the card — help them download the app
Lyft drivers spend their shifts inside the Lyft app. Drivers know it top to bottom, so they assume passengers understand the app too. They don’t. New app users can be very intimidated by the suspiciously simple sign-up and ride-request process and that can become a reason for them to not sign up.
After you tell a new person about the app and they express interest, help them find the app in the app store, download the app and input the info. Help them input your referral code, show them the free cool bonus thing they just got, and they’re almost guaranteed to use the app at least once. That means you get paid!
3. Promote your referral ID in unconventional ways.
If you haven’t noticed, my referral code is plastered on every single page of this website. It works! Web traffic comes to my site and new Lyft users punch in my code. It’s made me a few extra bucks.
Think of other unconventional areas to promote your code and you’ll see more promo money roll in on each new driver summary.
