What does is really take to become a driver for Lyft? In the online application to become a Lyft driver, Lyft lists these requirements for all drivers:
- You must be at least 21 years old
- You must have your own car in working condition (2000 or newer)
- You need to own an Iphone or Android to use the Lyft app
- You have to participate in a phone screen and an In-person meeting
But is that all there is to it? How closely does Lyft stick to these requirements? I’ve gone through the application process myself and I’ve spoken to many other Lyft drivers, and this article covers everything I found out about how the Lyft driver requirements really factor into Lyfts decision-making process.

“You must be at least 21 years old”
This requirements is self-explanatory and I’ve never heard of a Lyft driver being younger than 21. I’m 24 years old and I was surprised to discover that I’m one of the youngest drivers in my area!
Most of the dozens of drivers I’ve met are in their late 20’s, early 30’s, and 40’s. I’ve also seen and met several Lyft drivers who are in their 50’s. Don’t think that driving for Lyft is only a young person’s game just because all the promo videos show young drivers. If you’re 40 or 50+, your age will not harm your chances.
“You must have your own car, in working condition (2000 or newer)”
What does Lyft mean by “your own car?” Your car has to be registered to you,and you must be able to show proof of insurance. During the application process you’ll send photos, scans, or PDF versions of registration and insurance documents.
And “working condition?” That means that your car not only has to run and drive without any noticeable mechanical issues or annoying sounds, but your car also has to be in very good cosmetic condition. Any major dents or damage may disqualify you.
If you make it through the other stages of the application process, you’ll meet with a current Lyft driver who will inspect your car and have you take them for a ride. The exterior and interior have to be clean and free from damage, so make sure to wash and vacuum your car before you go to meet anyone from Lyft.
2000 or newer? Most of the Lyft cars I’ve seen have been 2005 or newer. I’ve yet to see a really old car, and I think that the company favors drivers with newer cars.
“You need to own an Iphone or Android to use the Lyft app”
If your phone can run the Lyft app, you’re qualified. That means that Windows phones and Blackberries that can run the app are just fine. Lyft won’t inspect your phone or test it in any way, but you’ll want your phone to be newer and in good working order because the Lyft app is a big memory and battery hog.
“You have to participate in a phone screen and an in-person meeting”
After you apply online, Lyft says that they’ll try to call you within a few business days to screen you over the phone. In reality, it may take a week or two to receive the call.
The phone screen is very similar to other job interviews, but much shorter and much less formal. The Lyft rep will ask you one or two interview-style questions like “What have you been up to in the last 2 years?”, or “Can you tell me about your hobbies?” Lyft wants to know that you’re a friendly person who will be able to carry conversations with riders and stay cool under pressure, not that you’re the most intelligent and sophisticated human being in the city. Be genuine and you’ll do fine.
Same goes for the in-person interview. After you’ve made it past the phone screen and Lyft has approved you to move onto the final stage, you’ll attend a “mentor session” with a current Lyft driver. The Lyft driver will mainly inspect your car, but they’ll also report back to Lyft on your personality and behavior. The only real red-flags that may disqualify you are things like rudeness, irritability, impatience…all the qualities you’d normally associate with someone who isn’t well-fit for a service job.
The secret tip to getting hired by Lyft is…
There aren’t too many secrets or “gotchas” in the Lyft interview process, so if it looks like you fit the basic requirements, you have a very good chance of being hired.
But there is the one big secret tip that will increase your chances of getting hired: Start the process as soon as possible. If Lyft is new in your area or if the company is planning to expand to your area soon, apply now. The sooner you apply, the higher your chances of landing job.
