Do you save money with DashPass? See a price comparison

By Doug H, Updated June 14, 2023 Leave a Comment

The DoorDash app is covered in advertisements for DashPass—a monthly subscription service that promises $0 delivery fees and reduced service fees.

But is DashPass worth it? How much do you actually save, and how much do you need to regularly spend on DoorDash to make it a good value?

What you need to know

  • DashPass members save $4–$5 per order on average
  • Service fees are 5%–10% lower, and the free delivery perk is a $2–$5 discount
  • DashPass is worth it if you order DoorDash more than twice per month
  • Some delivery addicts have saved $12,000+ with DashPass

DashPass is a monthly subscription to save on DoorDash fees

DashPass is a subscription on DoorDash that offers savings on deliveries and retail orders. The main benefit of DashPass is $0 delivery fees and service fees reduced from 15% to 5–10%.

DoorDash claims that the average DashPass users save $4–$5 per order.

DashPass costs $9.99 per month or $96 per year with the annual plan, but there are many different ways to get a free trial or a discount.

How much do you really save with DashPass? Prices with and without DashPass

To see how much you save with DashPass, we looked at the same orders on two DoorDash accounts: One with a DashPass membership and one without.

DashPass savings ranged from 8%–20% off the regular price, with savings per order anywhere from $1.25 to $10.

When is DashPass worth it?

At full price of $9.99 per month, DashPass is worth it if you consistently order DoorDash more than twice per month.

If you regularly order four times per month, DashPass is nearly guaranteed to pay for itself every month.

If you only order once per month, you won’t get your money’s worth with DashPass.

Largest DashPass savings: Orders with high delivery fees, large subtotals

The biggest savings are for smaller orders that have high delivery fees. If your order is <$25 and has a $4 delivery fee, DashPass gives you significant savings.

And for larger orders—greater than $50—the service fee discount of 5%–10% off starts to add up.

Lowest savings: Small orders that already have no delivery fees

Many restaurants—like large national chains—already have $0 delivery fees for non-DashPass members as long as your order is at least ~$15.

DashPass isn’t a significant benefit if you’re placing a small order that already has free delivery for non-DashPass members.

And the service fee discount doesn’t start to add up to large numbers until your order is more than $30.

So if you only order an inexpensive fast food meal a few times each month, DashPass might not be worth it for you.

Other DashPass FAQs

How much lower are service fees when you have DashPass?

DoorDash says that DashPass subscribers get ‘reduced service fees,’ but they don’t say how much lower the fees really are.

Based on our research, service fees with DashPass are around 5%. Service fees without DashPass are 10%–15%, so DashPass can save you 5%–10% in service fees alone.

The service fee for most DashPass orders is 5%. Without DashPass it’s 10%–15%

One complication when studying DoorDash fees is that the service fees are variable. The exact fee depends on several factors, like the market you’re in and local order demand.

Does your order get special priority when you have DashPass?

Orders from DashPass subscribers don’t get any special priority. So your order won’t come faster just because you have DashPass, and DashPass doesn’t stop your driver from picking up and dropping off other orders before your order.

Some orders have an option for Express Delivery, which is a separate charge to guarantee that your order will arrive first if your Dasher picks up more than one order.

Express Delivery is not included for free with DashPass. You will still have to pay the extra few dollars for Express even if you’re a DashPass subscriber.

DashPass-exclusive items

Some restaurants offer items that are only available to DashPass members, called DashPass exclusive items. You can’t add a DashPass exclusive item to your order unless you have an active DashPass subscription.

Some items are members only!

Why would DoorDash and restaurants exclude customers from ordering an item?

Exclusive offerings are usually new promotional items. By limiting access, the restaurants bring extra attention to the new item and DoorDash gets extra attention for DashPass.

But here’s where ‘exclusive’ items get silly: Some DashPass exclusive items are available in-store, or through the restaurant’s app.

The Verde Steak Nacho Fries at Taco Bell are listed as exclusive in the DashPass app, but it is available in the Taco Bell app or in select stores.

How to get free or discounted DashPass membership

Full price for DashPass is $9.99/month or $96 paid annually, but there are several ways to get a free trial and discounted membership.

Free trial: Any user who has never signed up for DashPass can get a one-month free trial. The free trial will be automatically available in the app; no promo code or special link is needed.

Chase credit card users: Get DashPass savings and free access

If you’re a Chase cardholder, you can likely take advantage of their partnership with DoorDash to get free and discounted access to DashPass.

  • Chase Sapphire Reserve, Chase Sapphire Preferred, and J.P.Morgan Reserve: Free DashPass through 12/31/24 or a minimum of 1 year, depending on the date when you claim the offer
