Uber and Lyft are taking off.
It’s the new way to make a good, consistent income. You get to work on your watch, enjoy flexible hours and meet different, interesting people every day.
However, you need a car. Since you will need a car to work, having one is a pretty vital aspect of working for either company, right? If you don’t have a car, you might have already dismissed the idea. No car, no work.
That’s where HyreCar comes in.
HyreCar is a peer-to-peer car sharing market place that allows local car owners to rent their idle vehicles to Uber and Lyft drivers safely, securely and reliably. It’s an extremely efficient system that allows this process to be simple and straightforward.
So if you’re considering driving for Uber or Lyft, this is the place to start.
Or if you currently drive for Uber or Lyft, but would like to explore the other services that these companies provide (UberXL, Uber Select, Lyft Plus, Lyft Premier), HyreCar will give you the opportunity to rent a vehicle that qualifies, so you can start earning more cash!
Let’s take a look at what you need to do to get renting with HyreCar.
Basic Facts About HyreCar
Before we dive right into the step-by-step process, let’s take a look at the reasons why HyreCar is the rental company to go with:
- We are contract-free. There’s nothing you need to sign and commit to. The process is easy, flexible and hassle-free. To get your first booking started, head over to our marketplace.
- To make the commitment even less frightening, we do car rentals on a day-to-day basis. This means if you haven’t worked for Uber or Lyft before, you can give it a chance and rent a car with us to see if you like it. If you don’t, you can return the car after a couple of days, no strings attached.
- We have an extensive range of cars to choose from. This gives you options to explore Uber and Lyft’s various services and decide on the type of vehicle that’s going to suit you best.
- Since we have an open marketplace, our car owners decide the prices of their vehicles. This means they are competing against one another, which ensures you get an affordable, economical price for your rented car.
- On average, our prices range from $20-45/day, $200-300/week, and $600-1100/month depending on the type of vehicle and price that the owner sets. Feel free to visit the HyreCar marketplace to sign up and see what the rates look like in your area!
- Insurance is already covered. We don’t charge extra for coverage – it’s already factored into the final price you pay.
- Speaking of insurance, it’s full coverage. This means that if you have an accident, you’re entirely covered – no fine print.
- Most vehicle owners set high mileage caps (or none at all). This means you can work longer shifts without accumulating hidden costs.
Now that we’re clear on the basics, let’s get into the step-by-step guide that will show you how to rent a car through HyreCar.
Step 1: Search HyreCar for Cars
- Visit HyreCar.com to see the full range of vehicles we have available and decide which one you would like to rent. It’s extremely user-friendly.
- You will see an orange tag on top of the image of the car that says “Book Now.” Click here to book the vehicle of your choosing.
- It will then ask you to input the dates you would like to rent the car for. Remember, you have to rent the car for a minimum of two days.
Note: Feel free to book 5-10 cars that you like – you will only be charged for the first vehicle you are approved for. By doing this, you only increase your chances of getting on the road exactly when you want to.
Step 2: The HyreCar Background Check, Deposit, and Required Documents
- You will now be asked to put in your payment information. Please note that if you’re using a debit card, an additional $200 will be held as a fully refundable deposit.
- Once you confirm the booking, we will run a quick background check (for new drivers only), which normally takes a few hours.
- Once your application is approved by the car owner, you will receive the three documents that you will be required to upload to your Uber and/or Lyft driver accounts. The three documents include: vehicle registration, 19-point inspection, and your rideshare insurance.
Note: Your insurance will be sent to you 24 hours before you are scheduled to pick up your vehicle. If you decide to pay with a credit card, you will not be charged the $200 deposit, but we will simply keep the card on file for any incidentals that may occur.
Step 3: Pick up your HyreCar vehicle
Now for the part where you start making some money:
- Make sure you have your documents uploaded and verified by Uber and/or Lyft prior to picking up the vehicle so that you can start making money as soon as you pick up.
- You’ll need to get in touch with the car owner and arrange a day and time to meet so you can pick up the car.
- Do a thorough walk-around inspection of the vehicle to ensure there is no damage to the car before you start driving it – this will avoid any misdirected blame. You can even take photos of any surface damage or dents to protect yourself further.
If you’ve done the steps above, then your car is road ready!
Step 4: Extending your Rental Time or Returning your Car
You’ve got two options when your rental time is up – either extend your rental or return it.
Extending your rental is effortless. All you have to do is go to your driver dashboard on our website, find your current rental, and click the button that says “extend.” You may choose to extend your rental daily, weekly, or monthly – the option is yours! The best thing about it is the insurance gets automatically extended, so there’s nothing else you need to do but keep making money.
If you would prefer not to renew your rental time and return the car, you need to arrange your drop off time and day with the owner. After you meet and the owner does a walk-around inspection of the vehicle, they will click “confirm drop-off” either through our app or on our website. It is essential that you do this – otherwise you risk being charged late fees.
Starting out your career with HyreCar is only just the beginning.
Before you know it, you’ll be making a regular income and enjoying curious conversations with interesting people, all from the comfort of your rented car.
There’ll be no shortage of exciting work stories.

Without reiterating the same complaints, I too second Mariah’s complaints about the company. This is a very shady business that tends to IGNORE you if anything is wrong.

Hyrecar is the worst company that I have ever had the displeasure of working with in my life! These are my accounts from Dec 2017 – May 2018.
1) Hyrecar’s customer service is horrible. Most times you call and especially on the weekends, you will stay on hold for 10 minutes and then be asked to leave a message, they will never call you back. Most communication is done through email. When you ask them to call you, they will straight up ignore your requests. They will also refuse your request to have a manager or supervisor call you. I’ve been asking to speak with one for 2 weeks now for a particular matter and I still have not even received acknowledgment.
2) If you are displeased with a renter they will send your complaint to FairClaims, even if it is something they can take care of themselves. Please listen to this story: I had a renter try to make a repair on my car (this happens a lot, I’ve heard from Taylor at Hyrecar, because their deductible is $2,500 and the renters get scared when problems come up so they try to do repairs themselves.) Long story short, this renter attempted to repair a chip in the windshield without permission from me and ruined my windshield! They send the claim to FairClaims and after a month, I won my claim. I was scared the renter wouldn’t pay, but they actually did. All this could have went much faster if Hyrecar would have took care of it. The renter admitted they were at fault and gave Hyrecar permission to charge the card on file, but they refused to do so and sent the issue over to FairClaims. It was such an unnecessary hassle.
3) Hyrecar holds a deposit of $200 from the renter, but will refuse to pay you from it if something happens, despite the fact that rental agreement states that is what will occur. Here is my supporting story: A renter paid for 2 days but held onto the car for 4 days total, without properly extending the rental. He felt as though he shouldn’t have to pay for the last 2 days because Uber took a long time to approve his documents and he wasn’t able to do any rideshare driving (not my problem at all, you still made my car unavailable to others for a total of 4 days and need to pay for 4 days). It should be very easy and common sense for Hyrecar to charge the renter for the 2 days out of the deposit, right? Wrong! Not over there at Hyrecar! Hyrecar said they would send my concerns over to FairClaims! But the renter and I were still in contact with each other and he told me he never got his deposit back. So I mentioned to them that the renter never received his deposit, so I should be paid from there. Then I received a receipt showing that they charged the renter’s AMEX card… But 1) it was for the wrong amount and 2) It’s been a week and I still don’t have the money in my account and 3) I’ve asked to speak to a supervisor about this multiple times and still have not received a call or any acknowledgement. Horrible customer service and thievery going on here if you ask me.
4) Their website always glitches! Sometimes you will get paid the wrong amount. There was a time that I was paid the wrong amount and I refused to hand over the car to the renter because I could not trust that Hyrecar would pay me correctly later and make it right. It’s sad, and I know the renter was upset after paying almost $500, but I just couldn’t trust the company to do right by me, so I had to say no. Another thing about glitches, there have been times where I have not been able to access my account while renters have my cars. On Twitter I can see that this is a common problem.
5) I would like to restate what I said earlier. Yes, you read that right, the deductible on their insurance is two thousand and five hundred dollars ($2,500). I have learned from other car owners/hosts on Twitter that the deductible must be paid in full before Hyrecar will pay for any claim. Also, if the damage done is less than $2,500, they will not pay for any damages to your vehicle at all.
6) If you bring up to them anything about the company’s faults they will just say that they are a start-up and they are working hard to improve. It’s like talking to a wall. For me, it has gotten to the point were I’m not even mad anymore, I just shake my head at the pitiful excuse of a company Hyrecar is. They are a class action lawsuit waiting to happen and I really cannot wait to see the day this company gets sued and they are made to pay for all the harm they have caused people who tried to trust them with their business.
