If you needed a quick job done around the house a few years ago, the phonebook or Craigslist were your only options. And for odd jobs like assembling furniture or organizing, there weren’t any easy ways to find someone to get the job done. Now, apps like Takl and TaskRabbit can help you find someone to get the job done, or give you an opportunity to get paid for household gigs.
Note: Takl suspended operations in March 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The company claims they will resume services when the pandemic subsides.
What is Takl?
Takl (pronounced ‘tackle’) is an on-demand home services app that connects people who need a task done with workers who can do the task. Takl is geared toward services like cleaning, moving, handyman work, assembling furniture, organizing, or any other task that doesn’t require a specialized license or permit.
Work is completely by Takl “Providers,” who are independent contractors that partner with Takl. Customers post job requests to Takl, and Providers can apply for the work. Prices are offered up front.
Requirements to become a Takl Provider
- 18 years old
- Pass a background check – Must have SSN
- US-government issued photo ID (drivers license not necessary)
- Bank account for direct deposit payment
- Complete an online orientation
- iOS or Android Smartphone
What does the Takl background check look at? You may be rejected by Takl if your record shows a felony, a sexual offense, a violent crime, certain drug-related offense, certain theft, or property damage.
What kind of work can you do as a Takl provider?
Takl focuses on smaller tasks that can be completed within a few hours by workers who don’t need a license or permit to do the job.
- Delivery & courier
- Auto & boat work
- Landscaping and gardening
- Automotive work
- Seasonal work
- Build-a-Job: Design your own work
During the application process, Providers can select from 12 categories of work, each with subcategories. Choose your skills as accurately as possible to make sure customers can see your capabilities when they review your profile.
Work you can’t do with Takl: Takl does not allow work that requires a permit, professional services (think accounting, legal work, medical work, etc.), transportation services, childcare, or illegal & dangerous work.
Do Takl Providers have to show credentials or experience? No. Takl does not verify that a Provider is proficient in the type of work they advertise. Instead, customers rely on a rating system to see if a Provider is good at the work they do.
What is the online orientation like? Takl requires that all Providers complete an online orientation where they are taught how to use the app, what to expect from the job, and how to deal with common situations. The training is a series of videos and articles.
How much do Takl Providers make? How do they get paid?
Takl Providers are paid per job, in varying amounts that depend on the nature of the job. Each job listing features an up-front payout amount that takes into account Takl’s cut. Takl takes a 10% – 30% cut from each job; Providers are paid 70% – 90% of what the customer pays.
Takl bases job payout estimates on the type of work and the estimated length of the job. For a job that covers a certain square feet of work, such as moving grass, Takl will charge customers based on square footage.
Providers pay a monthly Access Fee: Takl charges all providers $2.99 per month as an Access Fee to use the Takl platform. The fee is subtracted from the first job of the month, or charged directly to the Provider if no jobs occur during the month.
When are Takl Providers paid? Payment is issued via Stripe 3 business days after the job. Instant payout is available for a small fee.

How Providers find and do jobs on Takl
After you complete orientation and become an approved Provider, you will get full access to the Provider area of the Takl app. The Provider app allows you to select your skills, view available jobs, view upcoming jobs, view completed jobs, and adjust settings.
Browsing and applying for available jobs: Visit the My Chores tab to see the Available Chores area. All available jobs within a 60 mile radius will be displayed here. The job listing will show a work description, the general location of the job, and more details about tools or skills needed.
Takl offers two types of jobs: “Now” jobs and regular scheduled jobs. Now jobs are urgent jobs that customers want completed on the same day. Scheduled jobs specify the customer’s requested date of completion. Customers can schedule jobs at a maximum of 30 days in advance.
Tap on a job and follow on screen options to make yourself available for the job. At that point, Providers wait for customers to select an applicant. If you are selected for the job, you will receive a push notification on your phone.
Contacting the customer: You can text the customer through the Takl app as soon as you are accepted for the job, and you can call the customer 2 hours before the scheduled start time of the job. Takl uses number masking, so neither the Provider or the customer will see the actual phone number of the other.
Arriving at the job: The exact address of the job site will become available after you are accepted for the job. When you arrive at the job, the Takl app asks you to verify that the job was correctly described in the job listing. If the job was not properly described, you can select a new job ‘size,’ which will change the price. The customer is notified of the new job size in the Takl app, and if they if they agree to modified job size in the app, you can proceed with the work. If the customer doesn’t accept the new job size, the job is cancelled.
Next up, do the job! Follow any instructions in the app about photographs of completed work.
Cancelling a job: Providers can cancel jobs, but there are consequences if you cancel less than 24 hours before the start time of the job. You risk being deactivated if: You cancel a ‘Now’ job, if you cancel scheduled appointments less than 24 hours beforehand, or if you cancel two scheduled appointments in 30 days.
Provider ratings: Both customers and Providers rate each other after the job is complete. Customer ratings are visible on job listings, and customers can see the ratings of Providers who apply to their job listing. If a Provider rates a customer less than 3 stars, or if a customer rates a Provider less than 3 stars, they will not be matched with that person again.
Can Providers use subcontractors or assistants? For some larger jobs, you might want to bring an assistant. Providers can bring an assistant only if the assistant is an approved Takl Provider. You may be deactivated if you use an unapproved assistant.
Insurance? Takl does not offer insurance for Providers, and Providers are liable for any damages that result from a job. Here is what Takl has to say about insurance for providers: “As a Provider, you acknowledge and agree that it is your responsibility to maintain in full force and effect adequate workers’ compensation (or, if permitted by law, occupational accident insurance), unemployment, liability, and other forms of insurance.”
How does Takl compare to similar apps?
Working as a Takl Provider is similar to other app-based independent contractor work, and it is very similar to working for TaskRabbit. TaskRabbit is a direct competitor to Takl, each offering similar task-based service that uses a network of contracted workers. Pay is similar to TaskRabbit, but more jobs may be available on TaskRabbit at the moment because Takl is a newer company.
If you’re thinking about working for Takl, you should also take a look at on-demand delivery and ridesharing. Jobs with companies like Postmates, DoorDash, UberEATS, etc. are flexible jobs that can provide side income.
One big benefit of Takl compared to similar app jobs is that there are no vehicle requirements. Delivery and ridesharing require a qualifying vehicle. Requirements for delivery are lenient, but you’ll need a newer car to do ridesharing. Even though Takl doesn’t require a vehicle, you will most likely need one to get to and from jobs.

What type of workers is Takl good for?
Working as a Provider for Takl may work well for those who need a side income and gig-based work. One common comment from Providers is that you can use Takl to fill in your schedule if you’re a hands-on worker in the industries that Takl focuses on. Handymen, movers, painters, landscapers, and organizers may be able to find new work on Takl that could lead to recurring gigs.
