By Doug H, Updated January 13, 2025 29 Comments

Did you know that UberX, and XL are not the only ride types in the Uber app? Depending on your city, there can be up to 10 ride types to choose from.

But many of the lesser-known ride types are only available in a few cities,

To see which Uber services are in your area? Download the Uber app and input a destination to see all the services available in your location.

Uber ride types that are not in every city

Uber WAV offers wheelchair-accessible vehicles that accommodate disabled riders. This service is for passengers who can not get out of their wheelchairs. A WAV ride costs the same as an Uber X ride.

Uber Courier is a delivery service that allows you to send and receive packages or return packages to a shipping store.

Uber Assist is for passengers who need assistance getting in and out of a vehicle, or need extra space to accommodate assistive devices like walkers and folding wheelchairs. An Uber Assist ride costs the same as an UberX ride.

Uber Pet is for passengers who want to ride with an animal. Drivers opt into Uber Pet and will be prepared to accommodate one animal. Uber Pet costs more than UberX.

UberX Share is a shared ride that pairs you with other passengers heading in the same direction as you. You get a discount on the ride if the system

Uber Español is an UberX with a Spanish-speaking driver

Uber Car Seat is a vehicle equipped with a car seat. Available in New York City, Orlando, Philadelphia, Washington DC

Uber LUX: High-end luxury cars like a Mercedes S Class, Tesla Model S, BMW 7-Series, etc.

Uber X Teen: Allows unaccompanied teens aged 13–17 to request an Uber ride or delivery

How to see which ride types are available in your city

In the Uber app, enter a destination and scroll through the ride types at the bottom of the screen to see which ride types are available.

Or search for your city at uber.com/cities and scroll to see available ride types.

Uber WAV and Assist: Wheelchair-accessible vehicles and special assistance

Uber WAV and Assist services are for passengers with disabilities and special needs.

WAV stands for wheelchair-accessible vehicle. Uber WAV drivers can accommodate passengers who use wheelchairs.

Uber Assist is for passengers who may need extra help getting in and out of the vehicle. Note that Assist vehicles are not wheelchair-accessible, so request WAV if you need to ride your wheelchair into the vehicle.

WAV and Assist are typically only available in major metro areas. Check Uber.com/cities or the Uber app to see if you can get a WAV or Assist ride in your area.

Assist and WAV can help passengers with mobility needs

Uber Car Seat: Vehicles equipped with a car seat

The Uber Car Seat ride type guarantees that your driver will be equipped with a car seat. There is a surcharge for this service in addition to regular UberX rates.

Uber Car Seat is only available in New York City, Orlando, Philadelphia, Washington DC.

Car Seat isn’t available in most cities

For Uber drivers: You can earn an extra $7 per Car Seat ride if you purchase an eligible car seat and opt into the program.

Uber Courier: Package delivery on demand

Uber Courier is a local delivery service that allows you to send or receive a package.

When you request an Uber Courier, a nearby driver will arrive at your location to pick up & deliver your package.

Items must not be more than 30 pounds and it should be able to fit in the trunk of a typical passenger vehicle.

UberX Share: Share your ride with strangers and get a discount

With UberX Share, the Uber app attempts to pair you with another rider heading in the same direction as you. You will get a discount on your ride if you end up sharing your car.

The Uber app tells drivers how to pick up and drop off passengers, so don’t be surprised if your driver has to make a stop before your destination.

UberEspañol: UberX with Spanish-speaking drivers

Passengers can request a Spanish-speaking UberX driver with the Español service. There are no additional fees for using Español; the cost is the same as UberX.

Español is confirmed to be available in many California cities and Chicago.

How to drive for Uber Español

In cities that offer Español, Uber will ask you if you speak Spanish during the application process and occasionally send you promotional emails asking if you’d like to opt into the Español service.

You can also contact Uber to be added to Uber Español.

Uber LUX: High-end luxury service

Uber LUX is a ride in a high-end luxury vehicle like a top-of-the-line BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Tesla, and even Rolls Royce.

How is Lux different than Black and Black SUV? Uber Black requires commercial registration and only allows black vehicles. Uber Lux doesn’t require commercial registration, so anyone with a qualifying vehicle can drive.

LUX is available in Los Angeles and Miami.

Uber for teens: Parents can request a ride for their teen age 13–17

Normally, Uber doesn’t allow unaccompanied minors under age 18 to take an Uber ride alone.

But with Uber for teens, younger riders can request a ride or delivery after their parent or guardian adds them as a verified user to a family profile.

uberASSIST is avail in Las Vegas also.
Uber says “any uberX can be made available for ASSIST after viewing an online course from a third party education and passing their certification quiz.”
However, access to that information is limited to those drivers that uber has reached out to specifically.

Is there any Uber services that I can drive for with background issues? Something that will establish my credibility and eventually allow me to drive for the other services like Ubereats and ride share driver? Please review this issue, I think it’s a lot more relevant than Uber might think. There’s a lot of us that are being overlooked.

I would like to know if I can use Uber to go to multiple destinations on the same ride, i.e., I am travelling from City Road, Southbank to Thornbury to Ashwood to St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Melbourne. I am planning this trip sometime this morning. An early response would be much appreciated,

    Thanks in advance.

Yes, you can do that. You’ll have to enter the last destination into the app and let the driver know where your stops are along the way.

They don’t accept the Sprinter or other full-size vans for any service.

I have been trying to find out whether I can use Uber to get me and some large items from one place to another.
I need to speak with someone to find out whether the car can take the item, or whether they will turn me away.
I cannot find a way to speak with a human about service support.

You’ll have to request a ride and immediately call the driver and ask. There’s no ride option meant for transporting items, so you have a to find a driver willing to do it. Try UberXL and tip in cash.

I am in Johnson City, TN, I have noticed a driver that sits outside of a establishment ( a bar ) for nearly 45 minutes with flashers on. There is an Uber sign on the vehicle. Is that an OK thing to do?

It’s ok as long as he’s parked legally. If he’s not, flashers and an Uber sticker are no excuse.

I drive in Chicago as UberX and UberXL. Uber Pool is a little different than regular X or XL trips. UberX fare is $.90 per mile and $.20 per minute. XL is $1.75 per mile and $.35 per minute.
Uber Pool is $.90 per mile and $.14 per minute.
I track and calculate mile earnings per mile each week.
Uber Pool, for me, has the highest earnings per mile because:
I get paid the time and miles from the beginning of the trip to the end of the trip, including the miles going out of the way to get the second, third, or more fares. One single Uber Pool trip I had had 4 pickup and delivery points. so for 4 pool trips, there were extra miles for pickup/delivery, and extra time. In Chicago, most Pool trips are within the city, so there are very few “dead” miles. Unlike UberX and XL, most Pool riders are ready for pickup and the wait time for riders is shorter (2 minutes). Also there is not 5 minute wait to get a cancellation fee. If the rider cancels or is not in the vehicle in 2 minutes and the driver cancels, a $2.00 fee is charged.
The only down side is that it seems that Uber Pool users rate the drivers poorly (my opinion).

This is a very bias comment. Uber pool is a slap in the drivers face. I can’t imagine a uber driver writing the above comment and must be someone from the uber employment pool. Average pool rides even if 3-4 are pooled together works out to be about $7 per hour . If uber x was not bad enough , pool really shows how Uber thinks of its drivers.

A single Pool trip of 3 pickups and drop offs was about 60 minutes from beginning to end and paid me $19.00. The starting point was near Wilson & Ashland and ended up in Hyde Park. That is over $19 an hour for the entire trip. A UberX trip from these points would have been about $4.00 less. Also all Pool trips count for incentives. No wait times, paid for every mile.
This wasat a time the Uber messed up my vehicle type and I was only UberXL. So for that time I( got only Pool and XL trips. My earnings per mile were the highest since I’ve been driving for Uber.
