How much does Uber cost?
It’s easy to find out how much your ride will cost before you request it. Uber automatically shows you how much your ride will cost when you enter your destination.
The price of an Uber ride is determined by the ride type, the distance, the time, market demand, and other fees such as tolls or airport surcharges.
The cost does not depend on the number of passengers. The cost of your ride will not increase if you have more than one passenger, but it will increase if you select a premium ride type like UberXL, Comfort, or Premier.

All of the Uber ride types in Los Angeles
UberX seats 4 passengers
UberX is the standard Uber service that seats up to 4 passengers. Only UberX Share is cheaper than UberX, so it’s a good option if you’re trying to get an affordable ride.
In most cities, UberX cars must be 15 years old or newer and pass a vehicle inspection that looks at basic safety features like brakes, tires, and overall condition.
UberX cars are typically sedans like the Honda Accord, Toyota Prius, Toyota Camry, Mazda3, Ford Escape, Ford Fusion, etc.
UberX Priority: Get a faster pickup
In some cities, you may see “UberX Priority” listed beneath UberX. UberX Priority gives you a faster pickup and lower wait times by giving your ride request priority over other customers.
UberX Priority adds a surcharge of around $5, so you must pay extra for the convenience.
UberX Priority: Pay a surcharge for a faster pickup
Wait & Save: Get a cheaper ride by waiting longer
If you’re not in a rush, you can save on the cost of your ride by choosing Wait & Save. Your ride won’t come as soon as other ride types, but you’ll save around 10% on the ride.
UberXL seats 6 passengers in an SUV or minivan
UberXL is for larger groups up to 6 passengers in an SUV or minivan. It’s a great option for airport trips or any trip requiring extra space for luggage or other items.
Typical UberXL vehicles are minivans and SUVs like Honda Pilot, Dodge Caravan, GMC Acadia, etc. Uber XL is the right option for a group that wants the most affordable ride for 5 or more passengers.
UberXXL: Airport rides with room for extra luggage and 6 passengers
UberXXL is like UberXL but offers even more space for luggage and passengers. With XXL, you’ll be matched with a minivan or full-size SUV that offers additional space for passengers and luggage.
Currently, you can only request an XXL for rides going to or from the airport.
UberXXL offers the most space
XL vs XXL
An XXL ride has more space than an XL, but an XXL ride will cost around 15% more than an XL. The XL ride type includes midsize SUVs, full-size SUVs, and minivans, while the XXL includes only full-size SUVs and minivans.
XXL rides are only available for rides to and from the airport.
Uber Comfort: Larger, newer vehicles with more legroom
Uber Comfort vehicles have more headroom and legroom than the standard UberX vehicle.
Comfort is a good choice when you need more room for yourself and your luggage, but you don’t need a minivan or SUV.
To qualify for Uber Comfort, full-size sedans and SUVs must exceed the minimum legroom standards. Vehicles must also be newer models, typically 5 years old or newer.
As the name suggests, Uber Comfort Electric is a Comfort ride in an electric vehicle. Comfort Electric is around 20% more expensive than a regular Comfort ride.
Uber Share: Share your ride with another passenger and get a discount
Uber Share is a shared ride with another passenger that offers a discount on your ride. You will only be matched with other riders headed in a similar direction as you, but be warned that you may not be dropped off first.
Uber first offers a small upfront discount when you choose UberX Share, and you get an additional 20% off if another rider joins your trip.
Each rider group is limited to 1 person, so you and other riders can’t bring a friend along.
UberX Share offers 20% off if you get matched with another rider
Uber Premier and Premier SUV: Luxury ride, replaces Uber Black in some cities
Uber Premier offers rides in a luxury vehicle or SUV. Some cities have Uber Black as their luxury ride type, while others have Uber Premier.
Premier vehicles must be 6 years old or newer, and drivers must maintain a high passenger rating.
Uber Premier and Premier SUV only accept luxury vehicle brands such as Audi, BMW, Cadillac, Chevrolet Suburban, Lexus, Lincoln, Mercedes, Tesla, & Volvo.
Uber Black and Black SUV: Luxury vehicles, commercial drivers
Uber Black is a luxury service with the highest vehicle and driver standards. It is the most expensive ride type on Uber.
All drivers for Uber Black must meet state and local livery regulations and only late-model, high-end luxury sedans or SUVs qualify.
Uber Black also offers longer wait times, premium customer support, and ride preference options to let your driver know how you want your ride.
In some markets, there are two levels within the Black service: Black and SUV. Black is a luxury sedan that seats four, and if available, Black SUV is a luxury SUV that seats 5 or more.
Uber Black and SUV are expensive! But you’ll get a nicer vehicle and a professional experience
Uber Platinum and Platinum SUV: Book a private chauffeur
Some cities feature an even higher level of service than Uber Black: Uber Platinum. Uber Platinum is a private chauffeur in the highest-tier of vehicle. Expect the most professional service, but at the highest price.

Uber Green: A ride in a low-emissions vehicle
Uber Green guarantees that your trip will be in a low-emissions hybrid or electric vehicle. There is a $1 surcharge for Green rides. Half of the fee goes to drivers, and half goes to the Green Futures program, which will help drivers transition to lower-emissions vehicles.
Think of Uber Green as UberX but with a hybrid or electric car.
Uber Pet: A pet-friendly ride
Uber Pet matches you with a pet-friendly driver for only a few dollars more than an UberX. Drivers have to opt into Uber Pet, so you can be confident that your driver will be happy accommodate your dog or other small animal.
Note that Uber drivers are not required to accommodate pets in their vehicles for other ride types unless the animal is a service animal.
Other Uber services: Assist, WAV, Teen, and More
Other Uber ride types are only available in select markets, such as Car Seat, Connect, WAV, Assist, Share, Teen, and more.
- WAV: Wheelchair-accessible vehicles
- Assist: Get special assistance from certified drivers.

What type of Uber is best for trips to the airport?
It’s not always obvious what type of Uber you should get when you go to the airport because you may be traveling with a group of people and bulky luggage.
Generally speaking, an UberX will work well if you have 2 people and a typical amount of luggage. But an UberXL is better if you have more than 2 people or lots of luggage.
How to save on Uber rides
All new Uber users can use a promo code to get a discount on your first ride. Promo code ‘cws7s2‘ (USA only) works for all new users!

I drive Mitsubishi blue colour, register for uber black and accepted. But then Iread the qualification for Uber black, Mitsubishi is not in the list and Uber black is for black colour only. Should I change to Uber X, if yes how?

Paul Feldman says
I am going to La Guardia Airport with two 26″ inch bags, one 28″ bag and one hand carry. We are two passengers and we are sure we will fit in a Honda Accord but not sure of the Toyota Prius. We would like to use an UberX car. What do you suggest?
DougH says
I think most UberX cars will be able to accommodate you. After you request your ride, you’ll be able to see what kind of car they have inside the app. If it seems too small, you can immediately cancel without having to pay any fees. Then wait, and try again.
Alex says
I am stuck in uberx and drive a bmw. I need to switch to uber-select. Can someone tell me how to do that please?
DougH says
You have to contact Uber and have them give you a Select profile. Visit help.uber.com, log in, enter your city, then visit the Account page to find the “I have another question” page. That has a contact form where you can ask to get that Select profile.
