By Doug H, Updated January 13, 2026 731 Comments

Did you know that there are 7+ ride types on the Uber app? Each ride type has a different rider capacity, a different cost, and a different purpose.

The most common ride types in most cities are UberX, XL, Comfort, Premier, and Black.

X is the standard ride for 4 riders, Comfort gives you more legroom, XL is for 6, Premier & Black are a luxury rides.

Read on to learn what each service is, how much they cost, and how to choose the right service for your needs.

The differences between Uber X, XL, XXL, Comfort, Share, Black, Premier, and Electric

  • UberX seats 4 passengers. UberX cars are typically sedans such as Toyota Prius, Honda Accord
  • UberXL seats 6 passengers in an SUV or minivan
  • UberXXL seats 6 passengers with room for extra luggage. For airport trips only
  • Uber Comfort is a ride in a newer, larger vehicle with more legroom than the standard Uber X
  • Uber Share is a shared ride with another Uber user
  • Uber Black and Black SUV are luxury rides with professional, commercially-registered vehicles. The most expensive Uber service
  • Uber Premier and Premier SUV are luxury rides similar to Uber Black

How to choose between Uber ride types

Enter your destination in the Uber app to see the which Uber ride types are available. Scroll through the ride types to see a price estimate for each service.

Change your ride type by tapping the name of a ride type.

2 steps in the uber app to select a ride type: Enter a destination, then scroll through the available ride types

Enter your destination, then scroll to choose a service

After you tap a different ride type, the button at the bottom of the screen will change to “Confirm *name of service*.” If the button says “Confirm UberXL,” you can be sure that you’re getting an XL.

Not all services listed on this page are available in every city. For example, some cities only offer UberX, while larger cities like Los Angeles offer 10+ services.

How much does Uber cost?

It’s easy to find out how much your ride will cost before you request it. Uber automatically shows you how much your ride will cost when you enter your destination.

The price of an Uber ride is determined by the ride type, the distance, the time, market demand, and other fees such as tolls or airport surcharges.

The cost does not depend on the number of passengers. The cost of your ride will not increase if you have more than one passenger, but it will increase if you select a premium ride type like UberXL, Comfort, or Premier.

All of the Uber ride types in Los Angeles

UberX seats 4 passengers

UberX is the standard Uber service that seats up to 4 passengers. Only UberX Share is cheaper than UberX, so it’s a good option if you’re trying to get an affordable ride.

In most cities, UberX cars must be 15 years old or newer and pass a vehicle inspection that looks at basic safety features like brakes, tires, and overall condition.

UberX cars are typically sedans like the Honda Accord, Toyota Prius, Toyota Camry, Mazda3, Ford Escape, Ford Fusion, etc.

UberX Priority: Get a faster pickup

In some cities, you may see “UberX Priority” listed beneath UberX. UberX Priority gives you a faster pickup and lower wait times by giving your ride request priority over other customers.

UberX Priority adds a surcharge of around $5, so you must pay extra for the convenience.

UberX Priority: Pay a surcharge for a faster pickup

Wait & Save: Get a cheaper ride by waiting longer

If you’re not in a rush, you can save on the cost of your ride by choosing Wait & Save. Your ride won’t come as soon as other ride types, but you’ll save around 10% on the ride.

UberXL seats 6 passengers in an SUV or minivan

UberXL is for larger groups up to 6 passengers in an SUV or minivan. It’s a great option for airport trips or any trip requiring extra space for luggage or other items.

Typical UberXL vehicles are minivans and SUVs like Honda Pilot, Dodge Caravan, GMC Acadia, etc. Uber XL is the right option for a group that wants the most affordable ride for 5 or more passengers.

UberXXL: Airport rides with room for extra luggage and 6 passengers

UberXXL is like UberXL but offers even more space for luggage and passengers. With XXL, you’ll be matched with a minivan or full-size SUV that offers additional space for passengers and luggage.

Currently, you can only request an XXL for rides going to or from the airport.

UberXXL offers the most space

XL vs XXL

An XXL ride has more space than an XL, but an XXL ride will cost around 15% more than an XL. The XL ride type includes midsize SUVs, full-size SUVs, and minivans, while the XXL includes only full-size SUVs and minivans.

XXL rides are only available for rides to and from the airport.

Uber Comfort: Larger, newer vehicles with more legroom

Uber Comfort vehicles have more headroom and legroom than the standard UberX vehicle.

Comfort is a good choice when you need more room for yourself and your luggage, but you don’t need a minivan or SUV.

To qualify for Uber Comfort, full-size sedans and SUVs must exceed the minimum legroom standards. Vehicles must also be newer models, typically 5 years old or newer.

As the name suggests, Uber Comfort Electric is a Comfort ride in an electric vehicle. Comfort Electric is around 20% more expensive than a regular Comfort ride.

Uber Share: Share your ride with another passenger and get a discount

Uber Share is a shared ride with another passenger that offers a discount on your ride. You will only be matched with other riders headed in a similar direction as you, but be warned that you may not be dropped off first.

Uber first offers a small upfront discount when you choose UberX Share, and you get an additional 20% off if another rider joins your trip.

Each rider group is limited to 1 person, so you and other riders can’t bring a friend along.

Uber Premier and Premier SUV: Luxury ride, replaces Uber Black in some cities

Uber Premier offers rides in a luxury vehicle or SUV. Some cities have Uber Black as their luxury ride type, while others have Uber Premier.

Premier vehicles must be 6 years old or newer, and drivers must maintain a high passenger rating.

Uber Premier and Premier SUV only accept luxury vehicle brands such as Audi, BMW, Cadillac, Chevrolet Suburban, Lexus, Lincoln, Mercedes, Tesla, & Volvo.

Uber Black and Black SUV: Luxury vehicles, commercial drivers

Uber Black is a luxury service with the highest vehicle and driver standards. It is the most expensive ride type on Uber.

All drivers for Uber Black must meet state and local livery regulations and only late-model, high-end luxury sedans or SUVs qualify.

Uber Black also offers longer wait times, premium customer support, and ride preference options to let your driver know how you want your ride.

In some markets, there are two levels within the Black service: Black and SUV. Black is a luxury sedan that seats four, and if available, Black SUV is a luxury SUV that seats 5 or more.

  • Uber Black for drivers: Requirements & Income Potential

Uber Black and SUV are expensive! But you’ll get a nicer vehicle and a professional experience

Uber Platinum and Platinum SUV: Book a private chauffeur

Some cities feature an even higher level of service than Uber Black: Uber Platinum. Uber Platinum is a private chauffeur in the highest-tier of vehicle. Expect the most professional service, but at the highest price.

Uber Electric: A ride in an vehicle

Uber Electric guarantees that your trip will be in an electric vehicle. Think of Uber Electric as UberX but with an electric car.

Uber Pet: A pet-friendly ride

Uber Pet matches you with a pet-friendly driver for only a few dollars more than an UberX. Drivers have to opt into Uber Pet, so you can be confident that your driver will be happy accommodate your dog or other small animal.

Note that Uber drivers are not required to accommodate pets in their vehicles for other ride types unless the animal is a service animal.

How to add multiple stops to your trip

You may want to make more than one stop during your Uber trip to pick up or drop off another person.

To add stops to your trip, enter your destination into the “Where to?” search bar, and on the following screen, click the plus sign (+) next to the destination you entered, then enter your second stop.

What type of Uber is best for trips to the airport?

It’s not always obvious what type of Uber you should get when you go to the airport because you may be traveling with a group of people and bulky luggage.

Generally speaking, an UberX will work well if you have 2 people and a typical amount of luggage. But an UberXL is better if you have more than 2 people or lots of luggage.

Your car is both Uber X and Uber XL, you will get pings for both, if they have more than 4 passengers then they should be paying for UberXL

Need a service that can pick me up from the hospital? Found out they won’t let you take a cab and have no service you can hire. If you don’t have a ride they refuse to do even minor procedures that require sedation. This is a huge weakness in the heath care system. Got booted from minor hand surgery because I didn’t have a ride. Sucks to have no family or friends near by. Thought I would try to get to know a Uber driver, pretend it’s a friend. Anyone think this would work?

This is an interesting situation that I haven’t heard of before! I think an Uber or Lyft would work as long as the hospital doesn’t require your ride to be ready and waiting for you before the procedure is over. If you can request the ride as soon as the procedure ends, you’ll be good. Good luck, and let me know if Uber or Lyft works out for you.

I had a similar situation at the emergency room. All I did was say yes I had a ride. Once I was discharged, I requested an Uber which came in a matter of minutes. Persons with medical situations who live in an Uber zone can always say, “yes I have a ride” to the hospital.

After receiving medication for a procedure, even minor, a hospital can not discharge a patient unless that patient has an adult with them who is able to get help should an incident happen regarding the procedure for 24hours. Its not related to “convenience” its related to patient safety. Its not a weakness in the health care system, its because providers do actually care about patients well being.

I had the same situation. They will not even start the procedure unless you have a “secured ride” with “someone you know” to take you home. You are too groggy to make a call coming out of anesthesia and they insist on knowing the name and number of your ride, and your relationship to them. It’s fine if that person is a “friend” – but they are 100% sticklers about this. There are NO options. I had to beg them to keep me overnight, which was at my insurance company’s discretion – and which they only did because they wanted overnight supervision as well as a ride home. I had the same issue with a fairly routine test where I was sedated earlier this year – a friend had to take the whole day off to go with me. They wouldn’t allow Uber or a cab. Where more and more people live far from family these days, there needs to be a service for people like us. I shouldn’t have to make a friend take a whole day off work because I’m having a medical procedure! My parents are elderly and 2,000 miles away – it’s a horrible thing to deal with at a time when you are concerned about surgery and all the other logistics around surgery. Maybe you guys could create UberRx for medical travel? (I want a kickback for that idea!)!!!

Hi i just started with Uber. I have been working in healthcare 15 years. I think your right hospitals should look into this. However I dont know how safe it is for the patient. If you have a reaction/side effect the Uber driver will need to be trained on CPR and have Epi pens ect. If you pass out walking away from the Uber to your place whos going to call 911? It is a huge responsibility to take on for everyone involved.

It looks like you can apply and get cleared to drive before you own a car. Quote from Uber’s financing page:

Sign up and let us know you need a car in the ‘VEHICLE INFORMATION’ section. We’ll connect you with a list of preferred dealers in your city once you pass a background check and are approved to drive.

If you pass the background check and get approved, you don’t necessarily have to agree to get a car through a dealership partnered with Uber, but if you go out and buy your own car make sure it meets Uber requirements!

    Hello,

May I ask how to apply to be a Black Car provider? I meet all the requirements listed. Also, would I be able to take UberX fares too or only Black Car? Thank you in advance for any and all assistance.

    Hello,

I recently started driving for Uber & have some questions that Uber did not answer. First, the difference between X & XL. I see your explanation here & it makes sense but Uber has me listed on the invoice page as both & has sent me texts saying I am an XL partner. I have a Toyota SUV. It does have a 3rd row seat that I can use but my question is why would I? Uber doesn’t pay drivers per passenger, so that would be my incentive. Also, with the Uber rate fee of 20% for X & 28% for XL, which one has the greatest profit for me? The rates are higher on XL but then Uber takes a much larger cut.

    Thanks for any helpful info!

Hi Ann, thanks for writing in. There are a few things that will make XL worth it for you, in my opinion: XL rates are roughly twice as high as X rates, and XL has a much higher minimum fare. Higher rates and the higher minimum should more than cover the extra cut that Uber takes for XL.

Using current Los Angeles rates, a 10-minute 10-mile ride for X would pay you $8.64 after the 20% cut. The same ride with XL would pay you $15.84 after the higher 28% cut. That seems worth it to me. I wish I had a car big enough to drive for XL!

The only other catch with XL is that you’ll usually have to drive further to pick up XL fares because there are fewer XL drivers. The gas costs could add up.

Try giving some XL rides and let me know if you think it’s worth it!

I have a seven passenger minivan, this would be considered an UberXL But I don’t get it, how does the driver decide if he is an X or XL driver at any given time for the purpose of compensation?
