How to choose between Uber ride types
Enter your destination in the Uber app to see the which Uber ride types are available. Scroll through the ride types to see a price estimate for each service.
Change your ride type by tapping the name of a ride type.
After you tap a different ride type, the button at the bottom of the screen will change to “Confirm *name of service*.” If the button says “Confirm UberXL,” you can be sure that you’re getting an XL.
Not all services listed on this page are available in every city. For example, some cities only offer UberX, while larger cities like Los Angeles offer 10+ services.
How much does Uber cost?
It’s easy to find out how much your ride will cost before you request it. Uber automatically shows you how much your ride will cost when you enter your destination.
The price of an Uber ride is determined by the ride type, the distance, the time, market demand, and other fees such as tolls or airport surcharges.
The cost does not depend on the number of passengers. The cost of your ride will not increase if you have more than one passenger, but it will increase if you select a premium ride type like UberXL, Comfort, or Premier.

UberX seats 4 passengers
UberX is the standard Uber service that seats up to 4 passengers. Only UberX Share is cheaper than UberX, so it’s a good option if you’re trying to get an affordable ride.
In most cities, UberX cars must be 15 years old or newer and pass a vehicle inspection that looks at basic safety features like brakes, tires, and overall condition.
UberX cars are typically sedans like the Honda Accord, Toyota Prius, Toyota Camry, Mazda3, Ford Escape, Ford Fusion, etc.
UberX Priority: Get a faster pickup
In some cities, you may see “UberX Priority” listed beneath UberX. UberX Priority gives your ride request priority over other customers. That means that you’ll get a faster pickup with lower wait times.
UberX Priority adds a surcharge of around $5, so you must pay extra for the convenience.
UberXL seats 6 passengers in an SUV or minivan
UberXL is for larger groups up to 6 passengers in an SUV or minivan. It’s a great option for airport trips or any trip requiring extra space for luggage or other items.
Typical UberXL vehicles are minivans and SUVs like Honda Pilot, Dodge Caravan, GMC Acadia, etc. Uber XL is the right option for a group that wants the most affordable ride for 5 or more passengers.
UberXXL seats 6 passengers with room for extra luggage
UberXXL is the largest ride type with the most room for passengers and luggage. With XXL, you’re guaranteed to get a minivan or full-size SUV like a Chevrolet Suburban.
XL vs XXL
An XXL ride guarantees more space than an XL. The XL ride type includes midsize SUVs, full-size SUVs, and minivans, while the XXL includes only full-size SUVs and minivans.
Many midsize SUVs that qualify for XL have cramped third row seating and may not have extra room for luggage, so go for the XXL if your group has large adults or large luggage pieces.
Uber Comfort: Larger, newer vehicles with more legroom
Uber Comfort vehicles have more headroom and legroom than the standard UberX vehicle.
Comfort is a good choice when you need more room for yourself and your luggage, but you don’t need a minivan or SUV.
To qualify for Uber Comfort, full-size sedans and SUVs must exceed the minimum legroom standards. Vehicles must also be newer models, typically 5 years old or newer.
Uber Comfort Electric is a special edition of Comfort for electric cars. Comfort Electric costs a few dollars more than a regular Comfort ride.
UberX Share: Share your ride with another passenger and get a discount
UberX Share is a shared ride with another passenger that offers a discount on your ride.
Uber first offers a small upfront discount when you choose UberX Share, and you get an additional 20% off if another rider joins your trip.
You will only be matched with other riders headed in a similar direction as you, but be warned that you may not be dropped off first.
Each rider group is limited to 1 person, so you and other riders can’t bring a friend along.
UberX Share is currently available in New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Phoenix, San Diego, Portland, Indianapolis, and Pittsburgh.
Uber Premier and Premier SUV: Luxury ride, replaces Uber Black in some cities
Uber Premier offers rides in a luxury vehicle or SUV. Some cities have Uber Black as their luxury ride type, while others have Uber Premier.
Premier vehicles must be 6 years old or newer, and drivers must maintain a high passenger rating.
Uber Premier and Premier SUV only accept luxury vehicle brands such as Audi, BMW, Cadillac, Chevrolet Suburban, Lexus, Lincoln, Mercedes, Tesla, & Volvo.
Uber Black and Black SUV: Luxury vehicles, commercial drivers
Uber Black is a luxury service with the highest vehicle and driver standards. It is the most expensive ride type on Uber.
All drivers for Uber Black must meet state and local livery regulations and only late-model, high-end luxury sedans or SUVs qualify.
Uber Black also offers longer wait times, premium customer support, and ride preference options to let your driver know how you want your ride.
In some markets, there are two levels within the Black service: Black and SUV. Black is a luxury sedan that seats four, and if available, Black SUV is a luxury SUV that seats 5 or more.
Uber Hourly: Book an Uber Black, Black SUV, or Premier by the hour
Some cities allow you to book an Uber Black, Black SUV, or Premier by the hour.
You can book the car for 2–7 hours, and the hourly reservation includes a set number of miles that will be listed when you make your reservation. There are additional charges if you exceed the set number of miles.
Hourly is a good option if you want to keep the same driver for several hours. For example, you might want to book an Uber Black for a few hours to pick up friends, go out to dinner, then drop everyone off without having to request several rides.
To book hourly rides, select Browse at the bottom of the Uber app, then select Hourly.
Uber Green: A ride in a low-emissions vehicle
Uber Green guarantees that your trip will be in a low-emissions hybrid or electric vehicle. There is a $1 surcharge for Green rides. Half of the fee goes to drivers, and half goes to the Green Futures program, which will help drivers transition to lower-emissions vehicles.
Think of Uber Green as UberX but with a hybrid or electric car.
Uber Pet: A pet-friendly ride
Uber Pet matches you with a pet-friendly driver for only a few dollars more than an UberX.
Drivers have to opt into Uber Pet, so you won’t have to guess that your driver will let you take a cat or dog.
Uber drivers are not required to take pets in their vehicles for other ride modes unless the animal is a service animal.
Uber Select was a luxury ride for 4 passengers
Note: Uber Select is no longer available. It was discontinued in late 2023.
Select is a premium service that seats 4 passengers in a luxury sedan. Drivers must have a newer luxury car from car brands like Mercedes Benz, BMW, or Audi to qualify for Select.
Uber Select costs more than UberX and XL, and it’s a good option when you want a nicer car but don’t want to pay for the top-end Uber Black service.
Check your Uber passenger app to see if you can request a Select in your area.
Other Uber services: Assist, WAV, Teen, Español, and More
Other Uber ride types are only available in select markets, such as Car Seat, Connect, WAV, Assist, X Share, Teen, and more.
- Rare Uber ride types: WAV, Assist, X Share, and More!
- Uber for teens
- Uber Connect: Send or receive packages with Uber
Uber Reserve: Schedule a ride in advance
A scheduling feature in the Uber app allows you to book a ride with a driver up to 30 days in advance.
To schedule a ride, tap the clock icon next to “Where To?” in the search bar. Next, pick the date, time, and pickup & drop-off location.
How to add multiple stops to your trip
You may want to make more than one stop during your Uber trip to pick up or drop off another person.
To add stops to your trip, enter your destination into the “Where to?” search bar, and on the following screen, click the plus sign (+) next to the destination you entered, then enter your second stop.
For more instructions on adding multiple stops to your Uber trip, read this post:
What type of Uber is best for trips to the airport?
It’s not always obvious what type of Uber you should get when you go to the airport because you may be traveling with a group of people and bulky luggage.
Generally speaking, an UberX will work well if you have 2 people and a typical amount of luggage. But an UberXL is better if you have more than 2 people or lots of luggage.
How to save on Uber rides
All new Uber users can use a promo code to get a discount on your first ride. Promo code ‘cws7s2‘ (USA only) works for all new users!
Uber also has a monthly membership called Uber One that offers discounts on rides and Uber Eats deliveries.

Hi, thanks for your post. Is there a ubervan option so I can book trips with minivan? We are 6 people in a group. Is there a min charge? one trip is only 7 minutes, one trip is 35 mins, but going through busy highway, so may take longer, do we may more if it’s stuck in traffic?
Thanks
Doug H says
There’s no way to specifically request a minivan. If you request an XL there’s a good chance that it will be a minivan or SUV. If you don’t like the car that you match with, cancel within 2 minutes to avoid the cancellation fee, then request another ride until you get the right car.
yan ke yong says
thanks. could you also answer this part: Is there a mininum charge? one trip is only 7 minutes, one trip is 35 mins, but going through busy highway, so may take longer, do we pay more if it’s stuck in traffic or it’s set price when we booked it?
thanks

If you use uberx do you have to subscribe monthly? I’m just looking to use Uber to get to airport.
Doug H says
No, you do not need to subscribe to use Uber. Uber has a subscription called “Uber One” that offers discounts on rides, but it’s completely optional.
Barbara Rothman says
My friend and I need a car with a lot of legroom.
We are senior ladies on the hefty side.
Which Uber should we pick.
Need to go to a particular store 1/2 hr away
Shop for 45 minutes & 1/2 hr back. 40-45 ish miles
Doug H says
Uber Comfort would get you a larger sedan, and UberXL would get you an SUV or minivan.

My wife and I will take an Uber at Hartsfield-Jackson Airport in Atlanta to Gainesville Georgia (70 or so minute drive). We have 1 large luggage (not oversize) and 1 medium luggage. Also 2 small backpacks that we fit under the airplane seats. Is it ok to take an UberX or an Uber Comfort?
Doug H says
Yes, I think an X or a Comfort will work
Bob says
I use a manual folding wheelchair and can transfer myself into a sedan or mini-van, NOT a full size SUV. How can I assure I get the vehicle I need with a driver willing to fold and stow my wheelchair? I’m not seeing any WAV or assist options when I look for a ride.
Doug H says
Without WAV and Assist, you’ll have to take your chances on X, XL, or Comfort. One potential issue with XL is that many will be SUVs. There’s no guarantee an XL will be a minivan, and no way to specifically request one.
As soon as you match with a driver, you can use the app to send a message about your situation. If a driver is unwilling to fold and stow your chair, they can cancel and your request will go to another driver. I think that most drivers will be willing to fold and stow the chair, as long as you are able to get in and out of the vehicle on your own.
You’ll be able to see the vehicle model after you match with a driver. If it isn’t the right type of vehicle, cancel as quickly as possible to avoid any cancel fees.
