Driving for on-demand delivery apps is a growing work opportunity, especially if your car isn’t new enough for Uber and Lyft.
The vehicle requirements for most delivery apps are easy to meet: Any working vehicle qualifies, and you can even deliver on a bicycle or moped in some cities.
Delivery jobs are especially appealing to younger drivers: Most delivery apps hire drivers 18 or older.

Most delivery companies run a background and driving record check during the application process.
You may be disqualified for any major violations: DUI, reckless driving, driving with a suspended license, and others. You’re also may be disqualified if you have more than 2 moving violations in the last several years.
Do you need special auto insurance to drive for delivery apps?
When it comes to auto insurance and delivery work, there are two important questions to answer: What coverage does the delivery app offer, and does your auto policy cover delivery work?
Insurance coverage is offered by (some) delivery apps: Most (but not all) delivery apps provide liability auto insurance that covers you while you do delivery work.
Amazon Flex and Uber Eats also offer contingent collision coverage, meaning you receive collision coverage and liability coverage if you carry collision coverage on your own policy.
Instacart does not offer any insurance for delivery partners, so your auto policy must cover everything in the event of an accident.
Does your auto insurance policy cover delivery work? Most personal auto insurance policies do not cover delivery driving, so your claim may be denied if you get into an accident while working for a delivery app.
Check with your insurance company to see what they cover, and seek out a policy that covers delivery if they don’t. Many of the big-name insurance companies now have products that cover delivery.
Contact insurance agents in your area to find a policy, or do a google search for ‘delivery auto insurance’ in your area.
How to rent a car for delivery apps
You can rent a car to drive for delivery apps if you don’t have access to a qualifying vehicle.
Rentals from HyreCar can be used for any delivery app. You can also use HyreCar to rent a vehicle for Uber and Lyft.
If you want to deliver for Uber Eats, the Uber Eats Vehicle Marketplace offers weekly rentals that start around $250 per week.

and actually what i’ve heard asked in an accident investigation is not “driving for Uber or Lyft?” but “was the vehicle being used for business?”
Dionna Page says
Can you do uber eats with sr22 insurance I have my husband truck but he doesn’t drive because his license is suspended right now so I drive but I have sr22 insurance
DougH says
No. If you have sr22, it means your driving record isn’t great, so you’ll be disqualified for the bad record
jerome says
can you use a car with salvage title for uber eats ? since you don’t have people on your car it shouldn’t matter right? If so where do you sign up? every time I try to sign up it takes me right to regular uber x driver sign up, which won’t let me use because of the salvage title.
DougH says
I believe the salvage rules apply to delivery too. This is my referral link to a delivery-specific application. If that one also bounces you away because of the salvage title, that’s your answer.
Corey says
I have tickets in my name at the moment. Is there any chances that Uber EATS or DoorDash will hire me?
DougH says
You can have 3 minor violations in the last 3 years, but no major violations. If you’re not sure whether your violations are major or minor, you could just apply and hope for the best
Tom Harding says
What company can a person work for that had a DUI 6 1/2 years ago?
A friend hasa been turned down for Uber, but has not applied for Uber Eats.
DougH says
Uber Eats uses the same/very similar standards as regular Uber. With a DUI of that age, there’s a chance of being hired by Postmates, DoorDash, Deliv, Amazon Flex. But the truth is that all of these companies have similar standards, and a 6 – 8 year old DUI is right on the line for all of them. So you have to apply and hope for the best.
Joe says
I got kicked off uber eats because they changed the policy saying that you need a 98 or better.I drove a 97. Very frustrating. Also im in an uber eats only friendly city.
DougH says
I’m sorry to hear that. I just checked the EATS requirements for several cities and you’re right, they bumped it up to 1998. I think you’re out of luck. You should still be able to use your car for DoorDash and Postmates.
Armin says
I delivered by bicycle, recently I deliver by car, I got a notification from the Uber says, ” Your speed is changed, are you deliver by a vehicle?” the car is not mine I have sometime access on it. Should I say yes? The payment is different by car and cycle?
