How do I get started as an Uber driver?
Start by filling out the online application. After completing the application, you will have to wait a few days for the background screening to take place. Uber will let you know the results of the screening.
Uber will also let you know about other steps you need to complete. You will fill out vehicle information, uploading photos of documents like your insurance and vehicle registration.
You can sign on and drive after you pass the background screening and after all of your documents are approved.
What about auto insurance? Do I provide my own or use Uber’s?
Uber provides liability & contingent collision insurance. The policy covers you and your passengers, but it’s important to understand the limitations of the insurance and how you can maximize protection for yourself and your vehicle. Learn more about rideshare insurance here.
Does Uber pay for any driver expenses?
No. You pay for your own gas, maintenance, personal insurance, and other costs. The good news is that you can deduct some of those expenses on your tax return.

My car doesn’t qualify for Uber. Can I still drive?
Yes. Uber provides rental options in many cities. You can complete the application process even if you don’t have access to an Uber-approved car.
Is there a vehicle inspection?
Yes, but not in every city. Uber will let you know if you need an inspection during the application process. Uber will connect you with a list of nearby inspection locations and give further instructions for completing the inspection.
You can also have any certified mechanic complete the inspection, typically for around $30. Learn more about the Uber inspection here.
Do I have to pass a background check?
Yes. After you apply, you’ll be asked to sign an online consent form that gives Uber permission to run a background check through a third-party service. The background check goes back seven years. Read more about the Uber background check.
My application is taking forever. How do I found out if I was accepted or rejected? And can I reapply?
If more than 10 days have gone by since you initiated the background check and you haven’t received an answer, contact Uber.
If you were rejected, you can reapply after 3-6 months but your odds of acceptance are very low if you were already rejected.

I have a clean drivers record. I own a brand new Fiat 500L can I driver for uber in Cleveland Ohio ?
DougH says
Yes, your car qualifies! Good luck.
leo hernandez says
well i keep reading about salvage titles and clean titles, but i bought a rebuild title car last week is a honda accord 2014 the have everything working super but i want to know if a rebuild title is accepted in uber, since it passed the city inspections. if someone can help me with this i would greatly appreciated.
DougH says
Hi Leo. On Uber’s site they say no salvage or rebuilt title. The vehicle inspection doesn’t look at your car title. But when you upload a picture of your registration to Uber, they’ll see that it’s a rebuilt title and possibly reject you. If something different happens to you, let me know so I can share that with other readers!

Hi Doug, my application was denied last year due to 2 speeding tickets on my record. The total number of incidents on my driving record was 4 (1 major, 3 minor). All 4 will reach the 3 year mark in May 2016 – August 2016. Uber partner Support has encouraged me to reapply at that time. What chance do I have of being approved then? Can I apply with one ticket or should wait till August? My record is clean otherwise.
Thanks.
DougH says
That’s an interesting dilemma. If the major offense clears doesn’t clear until August, I’d wait until August. But if the major one is clear by May, I’d go ahead and apply in May. Hope that helps!

Hello,
Thinking about getting going with the application process, it looks to me like my 2007 Nissan Pathfinder would qualify for XL? Are there any mileage requirements? I have a couple of small dings and scratches around a fender well, it’s really not much, is this a problem? Otherwise real clean, brand new tires, great service records with the same auto company. My spouse and myself are on the insurance but the car is registered in my wife’s name. Is there an issue there? Thank you in advance for your response.
Alan
DougH says
There’s no issue with the registration as long as you’re on the insurance policy, and a few dings and scratches should be fine. There aren’t any mileage requirements, so it sounds like you’re good to go. Good luck!
Arnold says
My vehicle is under my commercial insurance which shows my company’s name instead of my personal name and I was told that since UBER has their own commercial insurance that my car could not be driven since I already had commercial insurance on it. Seems strange that commercial insurance would be better than personal but UBER would not allow me to complete the application process unless I switched to personal. Lyft did not have a problem with this. I really also want to drive for UBER. Any suggestions?
DougH says
Hi Arnold. Would there be any way to add your name to that insurance policy? I’m not sure if Uber rejected you because your name isn’t on the policy, or because it’s commercial insurance. I’d try to keep this situation as simple as possible by simply showing them an insurance manifest that has your name and your vehicle on the policy.
Jacob says
When obtaining proof of insurance, does uber contact my insurance company?
DougH says
Typically no, but there have been rumors that Uber can contact your insurance company. I don’t give those rumors too much credibility, so I wouldn’t worry too much. Uber doesn’t want tons of their drivers losing their insurance, so it’s really not in their best interest to call your insurance company.
Charles Supple says
It says I need “In-state auto insurance with your name on the policy.” I am on my fathers policy, but my name is on it as an insured person on the policy. Does this meet the requirement?
DougH says
Yes, that works! That’s how my insurance was when I started driving.
