Uber Driver FAQ

How much do Uber drivers make?
According to our research, most Uber drivers make around making $15—$25 per hour. View our research: How much do Uber drivers really make?

How do I get started as an Uber driver?
Start by filling out the online application. After completing the application, you will have to wait a few days for the background screening to take place. Uber will let you know the results of the screening.

Uber will also let you know about other steps you need to complete. You will fill out vehicle information, uploading photos of documents like your insurance and vehicle registration.

You can sign on and drive after you pass the background screening and after all of your documents are approved.

What about auto insurance? Do I provide my own or use Uber’s?
Uber provides liability & contingent collision insurance. The policy covers you and your passengers, but it’s important to understand the limitations of the insurance and how you can maximize protection for yourself and your vehicle. Learn more about rideshare insurance here.

Does Uber pay for any driver expenses?
No. You pay for your own gas, maintenance, personal insurance, and other costs. The good news is that you can deduct some of those expenses on your tax return.

My car doesn’t qualify for Uber. Can I still drive?
Yes. Uber provides rental options in many cities. You can complete the application process even if you don’t have access to an Uber-approved car.

Is there a vehicle inspection?
Yes, but not in every city. Uber will let you know if you need an inspection during the application process. Uber will connect you with a list of nearby inspection locations and give further instructions for completing the inspection.

You can also have any certified mechanic complete the inspection, typically for around $30. Learn more about the Uber inspection here.

Do I have to pass a background check?
Yes. After you apply, you’ll be asked to sign an online consent form that gives Uber permission to run a background check through a third-party service. The background check goes back seven years. Read more about the Uber background check.

My application is taking forever. How do I found out if I was accepted or rejected? And can I reapply?
If more than 10 days have gone by since you initiated the background check and you haven’t received an answer, contact Uber.

If you were rejected, you can reapply after 3-6 months but your odds of acceptance are very low if you were already rejected.

My background check and driver report has been completed. I’m assuming that I am cleared to drive for Uber. I also signed up for the vehicle leasing/rental program. However, I have not received further instructions for Uber. What do I do next?
    Thank you.

To check that you actually were activated, try to go online in driver mode just for a moment. If you can, you’re activated. If you can’t, email them and ask what your status is. Since you still need a car, look in your dashboards to the links to vehicle solutions.

You have to upload the registration card. They see it there.

Hello, we have been trying to contact you with no luck! My boyfriend has applied and has been accepted as an uber driver! We live in Frederick, Maryland but for some reason it has him assigned to “Greater Pennsylvania” How do we get this corrected so he can get started! We tried live chat and email and I now I am trying this method, whatever it takes! How can we get him assigned correctly to Maryland instead of Pennsylvania! This is very frustrating! He wants to get started!

If live chat and email aren’t working, try to find an in-person office. Go to ubermovement, input the nearest city, and try to search around for a Greenlight Hub. Those are the live offices where you can get in-person help.

Me again sorry lol..I put my boyfriend as an “added driver” on my insurance policy hoping thats all he needed to Uber in my car but they rejected the insurance document. He doesn’t have his own insurance could that be why?

If he’s listed on the policy and they can see that on the document, that should be enough.

Hi, you’d mentioned on here if you pass Postmates background check & they hire you (so I did & they did) chances are Uber will as well..So I applied to Uber a week ago but up till now haven’t gotten even 1 email letting me know what’s going on..My driving history report said “consider”, my profile says “waitlisted” & I can’t get a straight logical answer re: the status of my app outa anyone @ Uber support. SO my ? is does Uber at least notify you of their decision to hire/not hire you or do they just leave applicants hanging??

They should let you know their decision, but sadly it’s not consistent at all. If it’s been more than a week, you’ll have to contact them until you get the straight answer.

There’s a chance that an UberXL will fit 7, but it would probably be better to split the group into two. Have someone in the second group use a promo code to get around $15 off the ride.
