Lyft Driver FAQ
How much can you make driving with Lyft?
Ridesharing drivers can expect to make around $15—$25 per hour, on average. Check out the latest income data from the top resources.
How do I get started as a driver?
Your first step is to apply. Lyft will ask you to enter basic personal information and consent to a background screening.
While you wait for background screening, you can upload your registration, license, and insurance documents.
You can sign on and drive after Lyft accepts your documents and clears your background screening.
How does auto insurance work?
Lyft offers a ($1,000,000) liability policy, and a high-deductible ($2500) contingent collision insurance policy. You will also need to show Lyft that you’re covered by a personal auto insurance policy.
Does Lyft reimburse me for any of my costs, like gas?
No, Lyft does not reimburse you for any expenses. You must pay for your own gas, maintenance, personal insurance, and any other expenses.
As an independent contractor, you can write off some of your expenses to reduce your taxable income.
The application is taking a long time. What should I do?
If more than 10 days have passed since you began the background screening, contact Lyft and ask for an update.

Hi there, I hope I’m in the right place to ask a ‘new’ question: does the Lyft app use up a ton of mobile data? My wife and I only have a 5GB plan, but we’ve not even come close to using 2GB during any given month. Now that I’ve been on Lyft (and mind you for only about 3-4 hours a week) my data usage is almost full this past month. What can you tell me about this? Thanks.
DougH says
Most people report that the Lyft and Uber apps use around 3bg/month, which lines up with your experience. You may need to increase your data plan. Or try to save data in other ways, like being on wifi whenever possible.

Im active duty military and have out of state licence, insurance and vehicle tags. Will i have to get everything transfered to the state im stationed in?
DougH says
Uber and Lyft both told me that they don’t make exceptions for military members on the in-state license and registration requirements. But I’ve also heard anecdotes from military members who say they were able to get started with out of state documents. I think it’s worth trying to apply with what you have now.
Michael says
Can my mom and I use the same vehicle on days where she can’t drive or I can’t drive?
DougH says
Yes, as long as you’re both insured to drive it
Pam says
Can me and my husband be in the car at the same time driving for Lyft or Uber?
DougH says
No. Neither company allows it. You can deliver with your husband on apps like Postmates and Doordash, or UberEATS. But regular Uber or Lyft won’t allow it.
Elvia says
thanks for sharing this info! quick question, will lyft take licences that say “federal limits” and do they actually require u to have a SSN?
DougH says
I’m not sure about the ‘federal limits’ license. The SSN is a requirement because they need it to run a background and driving record check.
Toshiba says
If the insurance company that hit my car puts me in a rental car can I use that vehicle to drive for Lyft?
DougH says
No. You won’t be able to add it to Lyft
Faith says
Can my husband and If we both are lyft drivers driver in the car together to pick up fares?
DougH says
No, Lyft and Uber never allow that. And if a passenger complains, you will be deactivated. It’s a strict rule.
Nicole says
How to sign spouse to drive for lyft when car is registered with lyft already.
DougH says
Your spouse should sign up on their own and add the car as normal. Two people can add the same car to their own profiles.
