Lyft Driver FAQ
How much can you make driving with Lyft?
Ridesharing drivers can expect to make around $15—$25 per hour, on average. Check out the latest income data from the top resources.
How do I get started as a driver?
Your first step is to apply. Lyft will ask you to enter basic personal information and consent to a background screening.
While you wait for background screening, you can upload your registration, license, and insurance documents.
You can sign on and drive after Lyft accepts your documents and clears your background screening.
How does auto insurance work?
Lyft offers a ($1,000,000) liability policy, and a high-deductible ($2500) contingent collision insurance policy. You will also need to show Lyft that you’re covered by a personal auto insurance policy.
Does Lyft reimburse me for any of my costs, like gas?
No, Lyft does not reimburse you for any expenses. You must pay for your own gas, maintenance, personal insurance, and any other expenses.
As an independent contractor, you can write off some of your expenses to reduce your taxable income.
The application is taking a long time. What should I do?
If more than 10 days have passed since you began the background screening, contact Lyft and ask for an update.

I was hit and car is in shop. I am trying to find a local Lyft popup to add my rental car too. Where do I go?
DougH says
You can’t add a traditional rental car, only a rideshare rental. A regular rental won’t provide you with the documents you need to add it to Lyft, and driving it for Lyft would violate your rental agreement
Laura Davis says
How can I charge scooters for Lyft, must I be a driver as well
DougH says
Lyft doesn’t use independent contractors to charge scooters. Bird and Lime do that. Here’s my post about the differences between Bird, Lime, Uber Scooter, Lyft scooter
Edward Leach says
Me and my wife don’t have a car ..we was wondering if we could share a lyft express car…she drive in the day I drive at night
DougH says
I asked Lyft and they replied, “you won’t be able to share a Vehicle with a spouse or anyone else”
Diana Huesca says
Do you have a program that I can become a driver for children ?
DougH says
No. Lyft and Uber don’t allow unaccompanied minors to use their services
Niki says
How do I become a Lyft hub station? We are ASE certified.
DougH says
Any state-certified facility can do the Lyft inspection. Drivers bring you the form, and you complete the inspection and fill out the form. You may be able to advertise something like “We do rideshare inspections here,” but I wouldn’t use the names Uber or Lyft on any signs or ads. And just to clear up the terms, Lyft Hubs are official Lyft offices that offer help for drivers.
Joanna Burroughs says
My husband and I would like to become Lyft drivers as a TEAM due to safety reasons. I have an 8 passenger van so I would still be able to seat 6 riders. Is team driving allowed?
DougH says
Two problems here: Lyft doesn’t accept full-size vans, and they don’t allow team driving. And they offer no exception on either of those rules.
Beth says
Is there a minimum /maximum about hours required per week?
DougH says
There is no set minimum or maximum, but Lyft does force you to take a 6 hour break for every 14 hours you are in driver mode. With those restrictions you can still work a lot of hours in a week.
