Lyft Driver FAQ
How much can you make driving with Lyft?
Ridesharing drivers can expect to make around $15—$25 per hour, on average. Check out the latest income data from the top resources.
How do I get started as a driver?
Your first step is to apply. Lyft will ask you to enter basic personal information and consent to a background screening.
While you wait for background screening, you can upload your registration, license, and insurance documents.
You can sign on and drive after Lyft accepts your documents and clears your background screening.
How does auto insurance work?
Lyft offers a ($1,000,000) liability policy, and a high-deductible ($2500) contingent collision insurance policy. You will also need to show Lyft that you’re covered by a personal auto insurance policy.
Does Lyft reimburse me for any of my costs, like gas?
No, Lyft does not reimburse you for any expenses. You must pay for your own gas, maintenance, personal insurance, and any other expenses.
As an independent contractor, you can write off some of your expenses to reduce your taxable income.
The application is taking a long time. What should I do?
If more than 10 days have passed since you began the background screening, contact Lyft and ask for an update.

I have signed up for lyft driver and approved, but how can I get my husband in same account? He is on insurance, but we he picks up clients they question why his name on it. How can I fix that so we can both alternate driving same car? Thank you in advance.
DougH says
He has to create his own separate Lyft driver account by going through the same signup process as you. Each of you will be able to list the same car in your profile, and when you drive, you’ll sign into your own personal account. There is no account sharing.

I am waiting for clearance to begin driving for Lyft. I live in Danbury ct. when I use the Lyft app. it displays everything as Bridgeport ct. even though I choose the danbury option. I don’t know how that will effect how my participation as I live nowhere near bridgeport ct.
DougH says
Take a look at the map on this Lyft page. It looks like Danbury is in the same service area as Bridgeport, so it’s likely they’re using the larger city to represent the entire area.

The base rate must be raised driving up to 4 passengers for 2 miles fighting traffic and get paid only 3.75 is unfair and pure exploitation if you ride the city bus in my town a family of four would pay 6 to 7 dollars for 2 miles ride.
Please consider to raise it to atlisit 5.00 dollars minimum

You might have an easier time applying in person. Check to see if a Lyft Hub is in your area.

I drive my car from Houston to Dallas every week for my work. Only during these trips, can I offer rides between these two cities as Uber/Lyft driver? If so, how can I become a ride sharing driver and advertise as such?
DougH says
There is a ‘destination filter’ that you can use several times a day that makes it so you only get rides heading toward your destination. But it’s possible that it will take several rides to get near your destination, so you can’t rely on it to get you one perfect trip from Houston to Dallas
