How do I get started as an Uber driver?
Start by filling out the online application. After completing the application, you will have to wait a few days for the background screening to take place. Uber will let you know the results of the screening.
Uber will also let you know about other steps you need to complete. You will fill out vehicle information, uploading photos of documents like your insurance and vehicle registration.
You can sign on and drive after you pass the background screening and after all of your documents are approved.
What about auto insurance? Do I provide my own or use Uber’s?
Uber provides liability & contingent collision insurance. The policy covers you and your passengers, but it’s important to understand the limitations of the insurance and how you can maximize protection for yourself and your vehicle. Learn more about rideshare insurance here.
Does Uber pay for any driver expenses?
No. You pay for your own gas, maintenance, personal insurance, and other costs. The good news is that you can deduct some of those expenses on your tax return.

My car doesn’t qualify for Uber. Can I still drive?
Yes. Uber provides rental options in many cities. You can complete the application process even if you don’t have access to an Uber-approved car.
Is there a vehicle inspection?
Yes, but not in every city. Uber will let you know if you need an inspection during the application process. Uber will connect you with a list of nearby inspection locations and give further instructions for completing the inspection.
You can also have any certified mechanic complete the inspection, typically for around $30. Learn more about the Uber inspection here.
Do I have to pass a background check?
Yes. After you apply, you’ll be asked to sign an online consent form that gives Uber permission to run a background check through a third-party service. The background check goes back seven years. Read more about the Uber background check.
My application is taking forever. How do I found out if I was accepted or rejected? And can I reapply?
If more than 10 days have gone by since you initiated the background check and you haven’t received an answer, contact Uber.
If you were rejected, you can reapply after 3-6 months but your odds of acceptance are very low if you were already rejected.

I have reserved a ride from Chicago O’Hare to Sycamore IL. When will I know if I have been matched to a driver? If I am not matched ahead of time, what are the chances that I will be able to re-book a ride once I land? Also, my wife booked the ride, but now she will not be coming with me. Will that pose a problem? I am a part of the “family” on the app. TIA
Doug H says
It’s hard to say when you will know about a match because there’s no guarantee that a driver will accept ahead of time. I’m not familiar enough with the Sycamore airport to say if it’s well-served by drivers, but typically you should be able to easily get a ride from an airport unless it’s in the middle of the night.
In terms of your wife booking the ride, I think there’s less potential for problems and confusion if you book the ride yourself. There’s no cancellation fee for a reservation as long as you cancel more than 1 hour prior to the scheduled time, so there’s no harm in your wife cancelling and you placing the reservation on your own profile.

I live in Woodstock NY and am looking for a ride to the Bethel Center for the Arts on Sat 8/19 and then a ride back from Bethel to Woodstock about 8-10 hours later. I know this is not a highly populated area but does UBER service this area? Can I do any advance reserving for a round trip ride like this?
Doug H says
Uber does cover that area of upstate NY. If I’m understanding your ride correctly, it would be a pretty long ride (60-70 miles) and it’s likely that it would be expensive. $100+ each way. Bethel looks like a fairly remote area, so it’s hard to say if you could reliably get a ride home. It is possible to schedule the ride in the app, but that doesn’t necessarily guarantee that a driver will accept the ride. So I’m not sure Uber is a great option. Try to ask other people from your area if Uber is reliable in this scenario.

I was an Uber driver and I was a victim of phishing fraud. Uber agreed to credit back $627 to my account as a “one-time repayment courtesy,” then they deactivated my account permanently. Uber gave me one vague and final appeal. The decision is “no action is taken” since there is not a spot fraud. It is not fair since I was a victim of phishing fraud. Please advise me how to reactivate my Uber driver account.

If you believe it’s fraud, the best thing to do first is to report it to your cardholder or bank. This post as more steps: Unexplained charges from Uber
